We Have a Winner! Announcing the 2024 BridgesEDU $1,000 Scholarship for Canadian Students Recipient

After reviewing 660 scholarship applications, I’m thrilled to announce the winner of the 2024 BridgesEDU $1,000 Scholarship for Canadian Students.

The competition was fierce, with talented students applying from across the country. However, after much deliberation, our scholarship committee selected Shirley Li from the University of Toronto as the recipient of this year’s award!

Congratulations to Shirley Li – University of Toronto for winning the 2024 BridgesEDU $1,000 Scholarship for Canadian Students

Why Shirley Stood Out

Selecting a winner from such a large and qualified pool was no easy task. The quality of applications we received was nothing short of extraordinary. Each applicant shared their unique story, academic achievements, community involvement, and visions for the future. However, Shirley’s essay addressing the prompt, “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” was one that truly stood out.

Shirley’s response wasn’t just about listing her accomplishments, though her track record is impressive. Instead, she dug deeper. She shared her journey of resilience, the lessons she learned from overcoming personal and academic challenges, and how these experiences have shaped her into the person she is today. Her writing displayed remarkable self-awareness and authenticity. These are qualities that often resonate with scholarship committees.

In short, Shirley’s essay blew us away.

A Tough Decision with Incredible Candidates

While we’re excited to celebrate Shirley’s accomplishment, I want to emphasize how incredibly difficult this decision was for the committee. With 660 applications to review, we were faced with a wide array of talented, hardworking, and deserving students. Many applicants showcased incredible leadership, volunteerism, academic excellence, and personal stories that left a profound impact on us.

The level of introspection and heart that came through in many of these essays was deeply moving. If you’re reading this as someone who applied and didn’t win, please know that your story still matters. These experiences will undoubtedly serve you in future applications and opportunities.

What’s Next?

For Shirley, this scholarship is a step toward achieving her educational and career goals and we’re excited to see what amazing things she’ll accomplish in the future.

For everyone else, this is not the end of the road. Scholarships are abundant, and opportunities continue to present themselves if you remain persistent. Keep honing your skills, refining your essays, and applying for every opportunity that aligns with your aspirations.
