With such a decorated history, it’s no surprise that the State of Georgia has several scholarship and grant programs for its residents. Students attending a Georgia college or university can apply for scholarships and grants from the state in order to help bring down college costs.
Below, we’ve created a list of programs offered by Georgia, which can connect you with free money. Grants and scholarships are not financial aid, which means you don’t have to pay the money back. This is what makes these kinds of offerings so attractive for college students.
But, before going any further, you should know that most state scholarship programs require you to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to apply. The FAFSA is available by visiting the Federal Student Aid Office of the U.S. Department of Education.

Georgia Scholarship Programs
HOPE Scholarship
Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement. The scholarship provides money to assist students with a portion of the tuition cost at a HOPE Scholarship eligible college or university.
Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship has program eligibility requirements, academic requirements, and a length of eligibility.
Students that meet all eligibility requirements and are attending an eligible public college or university receive a HOPE Scholarship award amount, to be applied toward standard undergraduate tuition, up to a maximum of 15 hours, for the specific number of hours enrolled, whether full time or part time.
Students that meet all eligibility requirements and are attending an eligible private college or university receive a HOPE Scholarship award amount, to be applied toward standard undergraduate tuition, up to a maximum of 12 hours, based on a half-time or full-time enrollment status.
Zell Miller Scholarship
Georgia’s Zell Miller Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement. The scholarship provides money to assist students with the tuition cost of attending a Zell Miller Scholarship eligible college or university.
Georgia’s Zell Miller Scholarship has program eligibility requirements, academic requirements, and a length of eligibility.
The Zell Miller Scholarship award varies and depends on the type of institution you are attending and your specific hours of enrollment.
Students that meet all eligibility requirements, and are attending an eligible public college or university, receive a Zell Miller Scholarship award amount to be applied toward standard undergraduate tuition, up to a maximum of 15 hours, for the specific number of hours enrolled, whether full time or part time.
Students that meet all eligibility requirements and are attending private colleges or universities, receive a Zell Miller Scholarship award amount to be applied toward standard undergraduate tuition up to a maximum of 12 hours, based on a half-time or full-time enrollment status.
Georgia HERO Scholarship Program
Georgia HERO Scholarship program provides educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones, and the children and the spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves.
Various categories of funding exist, which offer between $2,000 and $8,000.
REACH Georgia Scholarship Program
REACH Georgia is a need-based mentoring and scholarship program providing promising students the support to graduate from high school and achieve postsecondary success.
Students who complete the program requirements will receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 ($2,500 per academic year maximum) to be used towards the cost of attendance at a HOPE-eligible postsecondary institution in the state of Georgia.
- $2,500 per year, up to four years
- $1,250 per semester or $834/833/833 per quarter
Georgia Grant Programs
HOPE Grant
Georgia’s HOPE Grant (a separate program from the HOPE Scholarship) is available to Georgia residents who are working towards a certificate or diploma (continuing education programs are not eligible) at an eligible college or university in Georgia.
The HOPE Grant award amount will cover a portion of a student’s tuition.
Zell Miller Grant
Georgia’s Zell Miller Grant is available to Georgia residents who are working towards a certificate or diploma at a Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) or University System of Georgia (USG) institution.
The Zell Miller Grant award amount is the standard undergraduate tuition rate based on the school the student attends and the number of hours enrolled.
HOPE Career Grant
The HOPE Career Grant is available to HOPE Grant-qualified students who enroll in select majors specifically aligned with industries in which there are more jobs available in Georgia than there are skilled workers to fill them. These industries have been identified as strategically important to the state’s economic growth.
A student’s HOPE Career Grant award is a fixed amount per term based upon the student’s program of study and number of hours of enrollment.
Georgia College Completion Grant (GCCG)
The Georgia College Completion Grant (GCCG) assists eligible students enrolled at an eligible postsecondary institution that is experiencing a financial aid gap with their cost of education.
Eligible students must have completed at least eighty (80) percent of credit requirements for graduation from their enrolled certificate, diploma or undergraduate major or program of study. Eligible students must owe their institution for an outstanding balance of direct costs for the current term of enrollment.
Grant awards are based on program requirements and available allocated funds at the eligible institutions – University System of Georgia (USG), Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) or eligible Private non-profit postsecondary institutions in Georgia.
Eligible students may receive a maximum award of $2,500 which must be applied to the outstanding balance of direct costs with the college.
Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant Program (GTEG)
The Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant Program (GTEG) encourages Georgia residents to attend eligible private colleges in Georgia by providing assistance towards educational costs. The GTEG program is non-need based funding.
Recipients receive an award of $300 per quarter or $450 per semester and can receive payment for up to four quarters or three semesters per year. (Budgeted each year by the Georgia Legislature. The amount of the award may change during the award year.)
Public Safety Memorial Grant
The Georgia Public Safety Memorial (GPSM) Grant provides grant funds to the dependent children of Georgia Public Safety Officers who were permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty. Funds may be used towards the cost of attendance at eligible colleges, universities or technical colleges in Georgia.
Recipients receive an award that covers their total cost of attendance, minus any other student financial aid, at an eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia, not to exceed $18,000 per award year.
University of North Georgia ROTC Grant
The University of North Georgia (UNG) ROTC Grant provides assistance to residents of Georgia seeking Undergraduate Degrees and participating in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps as full-time students at UNG.
The ROTC Grant Program provides assistance toward the cost of education at UNG.
Recipients must enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at UNG in order to receive ROTC Grant payment for a school term.
Recipients receive an award up to $1,500 per academic year, $750 for Fall and $750 for Spring, depending on available funding.
University of North Georgia ROTC Grant for Future Officers
The UNG ROTC Grant for Future Officers provides grant assistance to residents of Georgia seeking Undergraduate Degrees and participating in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps as Full-Time students at UNG.
The ROTC Grant for Future Officers Program provides assistance toward the cost of education at UNG.
Recipients must enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at UNG in order to receive ROTC Grant payment for a school term. By the end of a student’s junior year at UNG, he or she must sign a contract to accept a commission as an officer in the Army National Guard or any branch of the armed services of the United States, effective upon graduation from UNG.
Students who meet all of the eligibility requirements, and who sign a contract to accept a commission as an officer, may receive an award of up to $4,000 per academic year, $2,000 for fall semester and $2,000 for spring semester.
